Optimal plant water use strategies explain soil moisture variability

چکیده

Plant responses to water stress influence and carbon cycles can lead feedbacks on climate yet characterizing these at ecosystem levels remains uncertain. Quantifying ecosystem-level use strategies is complex due challenges of upscaling plant traits disentangling confounding environmental factors, ultimately limiting our ability understand anticipate global change in dynamics ecohydrological fluxes. We reduce the dimensionality this problem quantify by combining with soil variables into parameter groups that synthesize key eco-physiological tradeoffs. Using a parsimonious balance framework, we explore variations uptake capacity, responses, performance via non-dimensional groups. The group synchronization transport atmospheric demand emerges as primary axis variation interacts representing hydraulic risk tolerance, especially arid conditions when limiting. Next, show specific maximize (leading gain benefits) weighted risks higher costs use). Use of Soil Moisture Variability in Artificial Neural Network Retrieval of Soil Moisture

Passive microwave remote sensing is one of the most promising techniques for soil moisture retrieval. However, the inversion of soil moisture from brightness temperature observations is not straightforward, as it is influenced by numerous factors such as surface roughness, vegetation cover, and soil texture. Moreover, the relationship between brightness temperature, soil moisture and the factor...

Scaled spatial variability of soil moisture fields

[1] This study identifies soil moisture spatial variability patterns using measurements across different extents (i.e., field, watershed, and basin) and depths (i.e., from surface to root zone profile) from 18 different soil moisture field experiments. The spatial variability patterns are well represented by negative exponential functions between the mean and the coefficient of variation of soi...

Spatial and Temporal Variability of Soil Moisture

The characterization of temporal and spatial variability of soil moisture is highly relevant for understanding the many hydrological processes, to model the processes better and to apply them to conservation planning. Considerable variability in space and time coupled with inadequate and uneven distribution of irrigation water results in uneven yield in an area Spatial and temporal variability ...

Terrestrial plant productivity and soil moisture constraints

Croplands cover 12% of the ice-free land surface and play an important role in the global carbon cycle. Light use efficiency (LUE) models have often been employed to estimate the exchange of CO2 between croplands and the atmosphere. A key parameter in these models is the maximum light use efficiency ( *NPP), but estimates of *NPP vary by at least a factor 2. Here we used 12 agricultural eddy-fl...

Soil-moisture limits on plant uptake: An upscaled relationship for water-limited ecosystems

Transpiration in water-limited ecosystems is controlled by the availability of soil moisture. Rain events in these natural environments may only partially wet the root zone, leading to a heterogeneous distribution of available water. This spatial variability coupled with the non-linearity of the function relating local uptake to local saturation produces a non-unique relationship when these qua...
